The Challenge

Legacy Frameworks: What's Happening at Macy's Responsive Update

Create an easy-to-update responsive page for monthly corporate updates and not release-dependent. Must remain on-brand and support continuous integration. Must work within all legacy and open-source frameworks. Must work with CORS and HTTPS restrictions, must work with legacy CMS systems and work around various expired security protocols and older java protocols.

Current site frameworks favors a code release schedule with 1-4 months between releases and often delayed for complicated reasons. Marketing refreshes are weekly and some are daily or hourly, such as flash sales or one day sales. Creative Marketing releases are a part of this framework, but the engineered framework does not work with basic universial design principles and prevents a responsive or adaptive approach. There is a 16-column grid structure and a fixed width of 960px for the site architecture, based on legacy engineering requirements.

With multiple meetings and siloed departments, a prototype of this corporate page was created to show executives, management, and engineering how we can move forward with responsive/adaptive design within the restrictions of the technology ecosystem of the large corporation.

The Solution

This grid system works within all silos of technology stacks within the corporation and can work on various devices, various timelines, and various technologies. Java 1.5 and up, works with current CORS protocols for fonts and images, and works within Continous Integration, Code Release, Creative Release, and Marketing workflows.
